Sometimes completely unusual things are revealed regarding the heraldic symbols of individual Russian cities, especially those located beyond the Urals, in the North, in general, on the outskirts of the land. For example, the coat of arms of Salekhard traces its history back to quite distant times, from 1672. The only moment, the coat of arms did not belong to the city, but to the Obdorsky principality, which was part of the Russian Empire.
Description of the coat of arms
It will not take much time to present the Salekhard heraldic sign. The composition is quite simple, based on a French shield, which is not surprising, since most Russian cities have chosen this very shape for their official symbols.
The only character on the shield is the fox, which is shown standing on three paws, her right front paw raised, which signifies movement. The mouth of the animal is slightly open, you can see sharp teeth and a protruding tongue, the tail of the predator is raised high up.
The coat of arms of Salekhard can be seen both in color photos and in black and white illustrations, since it is designed in black and white with minimal inclusion of scarlet color. The white color in the composition corresponds to the heraldic silver color, therefore, both options are allowed.
The color scheme is presented as follows:
- black is used to depict a fox (this is a silver fox);
- silver color - the background for the shield, as well as individual small details of the animal's figure (chest, belly, legs, end of the tail);
- scarlet is chosen to convey the color of the tongue and eyes.
On the one hand, the color scheme is very restrained, but thanks to the strict selection of colors and the peculiar artistic manner in which the animal is depicted, it looks quite strict.
From the history of the symbol
In 1671 in the famous "Titular" there was an image of the heraldic sign of Obdoria, with a description of the elements and colors. Based on this complete description, one can see that the modern coat of arms has retained the general color scheme: the fox is black, has scarlet eyes, the tongue, and the color of the shield is silver.
The princely coat of arms was officially approved in 1731, along with many other heraldic symbols of Russian cities. The new-old image of the main official symbol of Salekhard went through the approval procedure in 1998 (at the local level), and then in the State Heraldic Register.
