Cancun is known today as a great beach holiday destination in Mexico. An interesting fact is that even in the last century it was a very small fishing village, which would have remained an unremarkable place if it had not occurred to someone to develop the beach industry here. Therefore, the history of Cancun is not as long as we would like it to be.
From a small village to a fashionable resort
Cancun is located on the coast of the Caribbean Sea and today it is impossible to imagine that back in the 1970s it was a small settlement, because today there is even a large airport that provides almost the second largest volume of air traffic in Mexico.
The idea of developing a beach holiday in these places was adopted at one time with a bang by the Mexican government itself, which made it possible to invest significant funds here. The program became state-owned, and the resort was supposed to be given an international status. This is exactly what the government was counting on, since the investment had to pay off many times over. And it should be noted that the Mexican authorities did not miscalculate. If only because the sea here in different places has a different character. In some places it is calm, which is great for families with children. In other places, it shows its character, and this attracts young people who love extreme sports.
Indian and Spanish footprints
The stake was also placed on the tropical climate, which allows to receive tourists all year round. But more importantly, visitors to the beaches can learn about the ancient history of the area here, as the Mayan Indians settled in these places. Nobody touched the ruins of these settlements so that tourists could come up and see them up close. Tulum, Koba and Kohunlich are the ancient cities of this civilization. There are about two hundred buildings left here. They were helped by the fact that at one time the Spaniards did not consider it necessary to colonize these places.
If there was any colonial past here, it was peaceful and left buildings of the European type. However, the local buildings were not wiped off the face of the earth. Europeans in these parts erected a fort to defend against pirates. There are also temple buildings.
