People have long settled on the Black Sea coast, there were all the conditions for a comfortable stay: the sea, which provided food, good climatic conditions, opportunities for trade. The history of Koktebel is inextricably linked with the sea and Russian literature, many famous poets of the Silver Age, as well as writers, critics, translators spent more than one summer here, resting and creating new masterpieces.
By the very blue sea
When people first appeared in these territories, the history of Koktebel is silent. Historians have found in ancient documents a mention of the Atheneon settlement, which, presumably, was located in these places, but no artifacts confirming this have yet been identified.
But a settlement of the first Christians was discovered not far from Koktebel, on the Tepsen plateau, dating back to the 9th-10th centuries. Scientists claim that the settlement was destroyed by the Pechenegs and revived by the Venetians, although this happened later, in the 12th century. Also, the Crimean lands survived the era of the rule of the Genoese and Turks, but material evidence of the existence of the village has not been found.
More accurate dates are contained in the documents of the Russian Empire, which date back to the beginning of the 19th century: the name of the village that is part of the Feodosia district, Koktebel, and the number of courtyards are mentioned. In 1860, the document contains an interesting spelling - Kok-Tebel, it is noted that it contains a mosque, border guards and fish factories. This allows us to draw some conclusions about the composition of the inhabitants, their religion and main occupations.
Cultural resort
The history of Koktebel is brief: until the end of the 19th century - a small fishing village; since the 1880s, it has been transformed into a renowned resort.
The dacha settlement was founded by the landowner Eduard Junge, who bought up huge territories and started selling them for dacha plots. He invited famous writers, musicians and artists to his estate. Many of them were guests of the landowner, others bought plots and settled nearby.
The Soviet government, when it came to Koktebel, changed the political system, but did not change the essence. The period of formation of the new government was rather long and difficult. Revolutionary events, wars, famine, devastation did not contribute to the development of the village. And only after the liberation from the German occupation began a peaceful stage of life, the reorganization of recreation areas, the expansion of the hotel base and the resort as a whole.
