Many heraldic symbols of Russian cities, although they were introduced only recently, reflect the historical past of the region. For example, the modern coat of arms of Rostov-on-Don was approved in 1996, but in basic details it coincides with the sketch of the first official symbol of the city, adopted in 1811.

Bright palette

Today the coat of arms of Rostov-on-Don is the official symbol of the city, as well as the flag and anthem. The authors of the sketch chose a fairly rich palette, most of the colors on the list of leaders in European heraldry. The French-shaped shield (that is, having rounded lower ends and a pointed bottom in the middle) is vertically divided into two fields, painted in azure and scarlet colors. Each of them has its own symbolic meaning.

In addition, precious shades are used in the sketch of the heraldic symbol of Rostov-on-Don - gold and silver, emerald. In an insignificant amount (for drawing details), black is present. Of the rather rare brown color, it conveys the color of a natural stone. In general, the coat of arms looks very splendid and solemn on color photos.

Description of the coat of arms

The modern coat of arms of the city has its own prototype - a heraldic symbol, approved in July 1811. It was a shield, divided into two fields, in which the following elements were present: in the azure field - a silver defensive tower; in a scarlet field - armor and weapons.

There was a description of the coat of arms, which indicated what this or that element symbolized. So, in particular, it was emphasized that the tower is a kind of obstacle on the way of external enemies. Armor and weapons, located in a scarlet field, did not at all mean the combat power of the Rostov army. On the contrary, these are symbols of the spoils of war taken by the townspeople in the battle with opponents.

The main elements from the coat of arms of 1811 migrated to the modern image. But now the tower is depicted in the color of natural stone, moreover, it is complemented by the blue and white St. Andrew's flag, a symbol of victory. This is the so-called small coat of arms of Rostov-on-Don. There are also more complete versions, where the crown and border appear. The crown, which is associated with strong power, is made of gold, adorned with rubies and emeralds, judging by the color of the stones. In the frame there are green oak branches with leaves and golden acorns tied with a scarlet ribbon.
