Hungary is not a very big country, and therefore, once you find yourself here on a tour, it makes sense not to be limited only to sightseeing of the capital's sights. All cities where you can go from Budapest for one day are located within a radius of two hundred kilometers, and therefore you can use public transport and a rented car to get around.
Popular routes
When choosing where to go from Budapest, pay attention to the most favorite routes of the Hungarians themselves:
- Just over half an hour by train HEV from the platform near the Batthyany Тer metro station, and you are in Szentendre. It is called the City of Artists for the abundance of paintings sold on the streets, and those with a sweet tooth consider Szentendere their paradise for cozy cafes. The highlight of each of them is dozens of types of marzipans and other desserts.
- The beautiful medieval architecture of the 15th century in the city of Eger is not its only advantage. The local wine cellars are famous for their signature wine "Eger Bull's Blood", which guests are invited to try on excursions and tastings. You can get to Eger by car or by bus from the Nepstadion bus station in Budapest.
- Independently from the capital, it is not difficult to get to Gödelle, famous for its Grashalkovichi castle. Trains go there from the terminal Ors Vezer metro station in Budapest.

Galloping across Europe
But where to go from Budapest if the cherished Schengen is literally burning your pocket and demands to embrace the immensity? Of course, to Vienna, because the capitals of Austria and Hungary are separated by only 240 km.
The most convenient way is to take one of the early trains departing from the Budapest railway station. The journey takes about three hours. The price of bus tickets is lower, but this type of transport is too popular, and therefore it is worth booking travel documents in advance.
Excursions to Bratislava are no less interesting. The capital of Slovakia is located a little closer than Vienna, and this European city may seem quite attractive for a day trip. It will not be possible to combine sightseeing of both capitals in a few hours. Such a trip will require an overnight stay, which is more cost-effective to plan in Slovakia.
On the Hungarian Sea
In the absence of a real sea, the Hungarians lovingly call Lake Balaton this way, where it is easy to go from Budapest as part of an organized excursion. It can be ordered in almost any large hotel in the Hungarian capital. The program includes a visit to the village of Tihany and the open-air ethnographic museum, the city of Balatonfured, where sailing competitions are held, and Veszprem, especially loved by the Hungarian monarchs in the past.
The distance between Budapest and Lake Balaton is about 100 km, and the cost of a one-day tour is about 60 euros. The program usually includes lunch at an authentic local restaurant.
