How exciting and interesting to spend a few days in Italy? Stop in the capital and take a short trip through the magnificent Roman suburbs and surroundings. These lands literally breathe antiquity and history, and therefore any route will seem fascinating and informative. When choosing where to go from Rome for one day, pay attention to the most popular destinations among independent travelers:
- Electric trains leave for Tivoli every half an hour from Termini railway station. Just 25 km from Rome, you are guaranteed magnificent views of the famous Villas d'Este and Adriana. The first served as a model for the architects building Peterhof and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
- 100 km separate the Eternal City from Viterbo. Here is a 12th century papal palace and a magnificently preserved medieval Pilgrim Quarter. Trains run from the Roma Ostienze station, which is located at the Piramide metro station (blue line).
- The two most important symbols of Orvieto are the eponymous dry white wine and the cave city created by the Etruscans in the 9th century BC. A regional train from Termini station will take everyone there in an hour and a half.
- Fans of ancient architecture should go to Ostia Antica, because the exhibits of this open-air museum city are at least two thousand years old. The train to the past departs from the Roma Ostienze station at the Piramide metro station.
To the disappeared city
An excursion to Pompeii can be taken both by car and by public transport: the train covers the distance from the capital Termini station to Naples in two hours, after which you will have to change to the N455 bus and get off at the Palazzone stop.
Destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius, the ancient city is not the only target of tourists on this route. Choosing where to go from Rome for one day, they manage to look into Naples itself, visit the Monastery of San Martino, dine at a port fish restaurant or taste the Margarita pizza, which was invented on the shores of the Gulf of Naples.
Glorious history
Just 30 km from Rome on the shores of the lake is the town of Bracciano, famous for its castle of the 13th century. It was erected by the princes of the house of Orsini, who gave the world during its existence three popes and the same number of cardinals. Sold in the 17th century to the Prince of Odescalchi, the castle was named after him and is known today for its participation in many films.
