Danish cuisine is influenced by German and Scandinavian cuisines: it is famous for its rich assortment of cold snacks.
National cuisine of Denmark
The most famous Danish dish is smerrebred: this rye bread sandwich, oiled, is covered with various ingredients, for example, anchovies, eggs, parsley, tomato puree; fried fish with remoulade sauce and lemon wedge; boiled pork, green onions and pickled beets.
In Denmark, they love meat (they make stews, cutlets, sausages, salami) and fish (specialties are made from flounder, eel, mackerel). It is worth noting that meat is usually complemented with a classic brown sauce, fish with mustard, and both with berry sauce, which is made from lingonberries, cranberries, raspberries and other berries.
If we talk about specialties of specific regions of Denmark, then, for example, on the island of Funen it is worth trying sakkuk flour pudding with pork fillet, on the island of Ere - yeast pancakes with honey, on the island of Men - a spicy herring cooked in a special way.
Popular Danish dishes:
- pork stew with red cabbage;
- pork ribs in beer;
- game with baked potato sauce;
- eel roll;
- pie with apples, whipped cream and currant jelly.
Where to taste the national cuisine?
In Denmark you will find many eateries serving many varieties of smerrebred, as well as beer pubs where you can taste Danish beers. If you decide to eat in a restaurant, take cash with you - not all local food establishments can boast of accepting plastic cards of the main payment systems. Are you going to dine in a small restaurant, especially in the provinces? It makes sense to contact the administration in advance to book a table - often the work of such establishments is subject to an individual schedule.
You will be able to satisfy your hunger in Copenhagen in Told & Snaps (in addition to branded sandwiches with various fillings, the institution offers guests corned beef, herring, pork with stewed cabbage, and these dishes with schnapps) or Royal Smushi Cafe (the restaurant specializes in preparation of a traditional Danish open sandwich, as well as berry soup with cream), and in Odense - in “Carlsens Kvarter” (in this institution, decorated in the style of the Danish Middle Ages, visitors are offered to taste about 50 types of Danish beer, and entertainment activity).
Cooking courses in Denmark
Those interested in Danish gastronomy will be offered to go on a gastronomic tour of Copenhagen “Noma. Food of the North”. As part of the tour, master classes and classes will be held, the participants of which will learn how to cook some local dishes.
It is worth coming to Denmark for the Copenhagen Cooking Cooking Festival (August), where themed shows, participation in culinary fights, and tasting of Danish dishes will await you.
