Once in the carnival time in the town of Ptuj, you can find yourself in a procession with mummers dressed in scary masks. It is the fertility demons who are trying to chase the winter away.
Residents of towns and villages around Lake Bohinj wait in the evenings for ghosts in masks, symbolizing the souls of deceased relatives. Eerie, but kind characters wish the people living today prosperity and happiness, not forgetting to grab sweet gifts.
Useful little things
- In the traditions of Slovenia - the observance of cleanliness and order in the streets and in public places. Smoking is allowed here only in designated areas, and most catering establishments have been declared smoke-free zones.
- If you are invited to a cafe or restaurant, be prepared to pay the bill for yourself. Even participants in romantic dates here prefer to pay for dinner on their own.
- The portions in local restaurants are huge! It is in the tradition of Slovenia to feed the guest from the heart. That is why visitors often order one dish for two and ask to bring another clean plate.
