The capital of Estonia, Tallinn, is a city with a history spanning 8 centuries. It can be compared to an old box, under the lid of which many interesting gizmos are collected. You will find both medieval old streets and the outskirts of an ordinary provincial town that are familiar to our eyes, built up with typical five-story buildings.
It was in Tallinn that for many years the scenes of films were filmed, where the events took place in Western Europe, which was closed to us. Here the London detective Sherlock Holmes caught the Baskervilles' dog and the famous French musketeers rescued the queen's pendants.
Town Hall Square
The square, which is the center of the Old Town, has practically not changed its appearance. It is exactly the same as it was centuries ago. Cobblestones, sharp roofs, Gothic letters in the inscriptions - antiquity breathes from everywhere.
The square serves as the starting point for numerous excursions. Here, in the pavement, you will see the Estonian "zero kilometer" firmly poured into it. The building of the town hall and pharmacy are the ancient inhabitants of the square who settled here 600 years ago. There is a legend that it was in this pharmacy that the recipe for the famous Estonian marzipan was created.
Old Tallinn
The foundation stone of the city was laid by Danish knights. And the historical part of the city is under the protection of UNESCO. This "patch" has become the focus of all eight hundred years of beauty. Narrow streets, old paving stones, orange tiles on the roofs - here it is, Old Tallinn. The high fortress wall surrounding this part of the capital once protected it from enemies, but now it does not save a piece of history from the noise of our time.
A walk in Old Tallinn will take you back to the distant 16th century, and you don't even need to use your imagination. Just walk slowly along the echoing cobblestones, look into the souvenir shops, and be sure to have a cup of coffee, to which a drop of Vana Tallinn liqueur will be added.
Virus Gate
They serve as the beginning of the busiest street in the capital - Viru, a walk along which will take you to the famous Town Hall Square. The Virus Gate is also called the Gate of Time, since it divides Tallinn into two parts: modern and medieval. A pair of round towers dating from the 14th century protected the drawbridge. Later, a third was added. All together they are called the Virus Gate.
A park was laid out on the hill that was once part of the gate. There are many secluded places where couples in love can spend time together. That is why the hill began to be called Musimyagi, which means Kiselueva Hill.
The modern world does not impose such high moral requirements on behavior, but still there is a legend that if you kiss on Musimyagi, then your couple will have a long, and most importantly, a happy life.
