Panama Tocumen Airport, serving the capital of the same name, is one of the fastest growing airports in Central America. It is located about 25 kilometers from the city center. The airfield has two runways, their lengths are 3050 and 2680 meters. Since flights are made not only within the continent, but also to other continents, the airport's runways are very busy. Extension
Tocumen Airport has developed a long-term expansion program that includes 3 phases:
- Phase 1. In 2006, the passenger terminal building was expanded. In addition, the number of gates was increased to 28. Modern equipment was installed to improve the quality of services. The cargo terminal was also expanded.
- Stage 2. The second stage of expansion started in autumn 2009. It consisted in the construction of a new terminal, which is linked to the existing cargo and passenger terminals. The new terminal is equipped with an additional 12 boarding gates and can handle the Airbus A380. This stage was completed in early 2012.
- Stage 3. The third stage started in 2012. His plans include the construction of another passenger terminal, a runway, parking, and a new road to the airport. The stage is scheduled to be completed in 2016.
In total, more than $ 860 million was spent on all stages of the improvement.
