What do you think, what is the most popular place in Crimea, which millions of tourists must visit during their summer holidays? Black Sea palaces, beaches of the South Coast, Crimean caves? No, this is Simferopol airport, where most travelers arrive.
Simferopol Airport is often called the only air terminal in Crimea, which, in fact, is not the case. There are other airports on the territory of the Crimean Peninsula, but they are military bases or are used to receive private flights. All planes from Russian cities, and since 2014 Crimea has been accepting only flights from Russia, land at Simferopol airport.
The Russian government plans to allocate funds to transform the Belbek military airport into a passenger airport. This air harbor, located less than a kilometer from the Black Sea coast, will be able to slightly relieve the Simferopol airport. In addition, it will be more convenient to get to some Crimean resorts from Belbek.
Airport transfers
As the name of the airport suggests, it is located near the capital of Crimea - the city of Simferopol. The airport has excellent transport links both with the Simferopol railway station, near which the Kurortnaya bus station is located, and with the popular Crimean resorts.
How to get to the right place in Crimea?
- by taxi. The airport taxi service was launched in 2018. You can order a car at a special counter in the arrivals hall. The taxi arrives at the exit from the terminal 2-5 minutes after placing the order. It will take you to Simferopol for 600 rubles, to Yalta - for 1600 rubles;
- by bus. All bus services depart from the bus station at the new terminal. Comfortable buses take you to many popular Crimean resorts;
- by trolleybus. Several trolleybus routes pass through the airport, the final stops of which are in Alushta and Yalta. Trolleybus # 9 goes to Simferopol to the City Hospital stop.
Pages of history
Simferopol Airport is considered the seventh busiest airport in Russia. It was built in 1936, 12 km from Simferopol to organize flights with Moscow and other cities of the Soviet Union. The now closed old terminal appeared at the airport only in 1957. A few years after that, a concrete runway appeared on the territory of the air terminal, which allowed the complex to work even during strong winds and rains. In the middle of the last century, flights from Simferopol airport were made to other airfields in the Crimea. By helicopter, passengers could get to Yalta, saving their time.
In the 1970s, another runway was built at the airport. In the next decade, the complex participated in one of the space programs of the Soviet Union. It was assumed that the airfield could serve as an alternate landing site for the Soviet space shuttle Energia-Buran. For this, another unusually long runway was laid here.
New terminal
On April 16, 2018, 6 km from the old terminal, a new one was opened, which is a large spacious building made in the form of a wave. It has several features:
- designed to service 6.5 million passengers per year and 3650 people per hour;
- equipped with 55 check-in counters;
- adapted for people with disabilities, that is, it has 16 moving paths and 28 lifts.
The new terminal at Simferopol airport, designed by South Korean architects, covers an area of 78 thousand square meters. The highlight of this building is a huge wall with living plants. Over time, it is planned to open a greenhouse right at the airport, where plants typical of the Crimean latitudes will grow.
Before the opening, 400 volunteers, including journalists, bloggers and students, were testing the new building. They played the role of passengers, simulating situations that arise during normal airport operations.
The opening of the new terminal before the start of the summer tourist season has significantly increased the volume of passenger traffic.

Secret Passenger
The management of the airport in Simferopol invites everyone to participate in the Mystery Passenger program. Any tourist heading on vacation to the Crimea or flying away after a vacation at sea can officially monitor the work of all the main services of the airport, and then state his impressions in a report. After submitting an application on the airport website, the participant of the action will receive instructions in an e-mail. Not later than two weeks after the service at the Simferopol airport, he must send his report on his stay at the airport. If desired, the secret passenger can attach photographs and videos to the report. The same person can take part in the program several times. The most active secret passengers will be awarded certificates for staying in VIP lounges on their next visits to the Crimean airport. The rest of the participants will receive souvenirs.
