Description and proportions of the flag of Turkmenistan

The rectangular cloth of the flag of Turkmenistan has an aspect ratio of 2: 3. Its main field is dark green. Closer to the shaft, a vertical stripe of dark red color is applied, on which there are five gels. They represent the carpet ornaments of the main Turkmen tribes and symbolize the regions of the state.

Below the ornaments are bordered by crisscrossing olive branches, each of which has ten leaves. They appeared on the flag of Turkmenistan as a symbol of the country's neutrality and the independence of nations.

In the upper corner, closest to the base of the flag, there is a white crescent and five five-pointed stars.

History of the flag of Turkmenistan

The competition for the best design of the state flag of Turkmenistan was announced in 1991 after the proclamation of the country's independence. The task of the contestants was not only to create the flag of Turkmenistan, but also to reflect in it the historical and national peculiarities of the state structure. At the same time, the religious and political component was not taken into account, but only the traditions of previous generations of residents of Turkmenistan and the national characteristics of their culture.

The previous flag of Turkmenistan was a symbol of the Turkmen SSR as part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

The attitude to the state flag in Turkmenistan is very respectful and its use is regulated by strict laws. It can be hung on the buildings of the palace of the President of the country, the Cabinet of Ministers and other state authorities, on residential buildings, the buildings of the country's representative offices abroad and must be permanently on the flagpoles.

It is forbidden to raise the flag on buildings that are being repaired or in disrepair. Mishandling of the flag of Turkmenistan can be prosecuted and punishable by fines, correctional labor, or imprisonment.

The Republic approved the Day of the State Flag of Turkmenistan, which is solemnly celebrated and declared non-working.

The national flag of Turkmenistan is a record holder from the Guinness Book of Records. The flagpole on which it was raised on the birthday of the country's president is the highest in the world. The canvas flies over Ashgabat at a height of 133 meters, and its dimensions are 52x35 meters.
