Description of the attraction
One of the most famous castles in Ukraine is the Olesko Castle. An architectural monument of the XIV-XVII centuries is located near the village of Olesko (Busky district, Lviv region). Olesko Castle, part of the "Golden Horseshoe of Lviv".
The castle was built in the XIII-XIV centuries. Galician-Volyn princes. The first information about the Olesko castle dates back to 1327, when it became the property of the son of the Mazovian prince Troiden Yuri. In the XIV Art. he found himself on the border between Lithuania and Poland. At that time, the battles for the Olesko castle were of very important strategic importance, because it was the key to Galicia and Volyn.
The walls of the castle were 130 m along the perimeter, had a width of 2.5 m and a height of about 10 m. The hill on which the structure was built served as the basis for the fortification. Slightly lower along the slope of the mountain, there was a rampart with a palisade, and even farther - a rampart with a water ditch, which was another line of defense. The hill was surrounded by a swampy, impassable plain.
In 1431, Prince Kazimir Mazowiecki with his army set out on Olesko, but the ancient fortress withstood a six-week siege and remained unoccupied. A year later, the Olesko castle was nevertheless captured by Polish troops and transferred into the possession of Jan from the Seine, after which his descendants began to be called Olesko.
At the beginning of the XVII century. the castle acquired the appearance of a residential building made in the style of the Italian Renaissance. After changing several owners and suffering from an earthquake in 1838 and fires, the castle was badly damaged. In 1961, Lviv restorers undertook the restoration and restoration of the ancient castle, who tried to return the structure to its former appearance and equipped it as a museum.
Today, the Lviv Art Gallery operates in the Olesko Castle, which contains about 500 works of painting, medieval applied art and sculpture.
