Description of the attraction
There are several ways to get to the Marrakech Medina, but they all lead through the gate, most of which is a landmark of the imperial city of Marrakech. One of these gates is the famous Bab-Agnau gate - a real masterpiece of traditional Islamic architecture of the 11th century. The building was built in the Old City in the XII century. by order of the sultans of the Almohad clan. In the XX century. a grand restoration was carried out here.
From Berber Bab-Agnau is translated as "ram without horns". Initially, the construction of the gate consisted of two towers. Since the time of the towers have been destroyed, and it turned out as if the ram turned out without horns. It is from here that the modern name of the Bab-Agnau gate comes from.
In the past, the Bab-Agnau Gate was used as the main entrance to the government's heavily fortified quarter. Currently, they are considered one of the most important and interesting sights of the central square of the city of Djemaa el-Fna.
The gate was made in a strictly Arabic style. The structure includes several transitional Moorish arches, built in the form of a horseshoe and decorated with traditional Arabic patterns. This gives a complete architectural composition. The bluish shade of limestone used in the construction of the gate gives the building an elegant look.
Of particular interest among tourists is the stork, which has built its nest on the north side of the gate. Travelers take photographs of it no less diligently than ancient ornaments.
Bab Agnau Gate is located in the area of constant excursions, as there are other interesting sights of Marrakech nearby.
