Description of the attraction
Lake Shott el-Jerid is not a lake in the usual sense. Its surface is covered with a thick salt crust that can withstand a car. But in some places under the crust there is a swampy goo, which is dangerous for frivolous motorists. Nevertheless, in well-studied places on the smooth surface of salt marshes, high-speed races in car-fireballs are held here. The record is 900 km / h.
A road to Tozeur is laid across the lake. A fantastic picture opens up on both sides of the highway, which runs through the endless space glistening with salt. On an invisible horizon, the sky merges with the earth, which gives the impression of moving through a huge ellipsoidal tunnel, illuminated by a dim light that changes from ash gray below to bluish above. Visibility here can drop to 50-60 meters.
Kebili is often called the country of Fata Morgana. When the temperature rises above 30 degrees, mirages begin to appear on the surface of the lake. True, the air must be clean enough. Small grains of sand blown up by the wind can interfere with this amazing sight.
