Description of the attraction
Prilau Castle is a former hunting mansion of the princes of the church, which has now been converted into a comfortable hotel with 11 rooms. It is located a few hundred meters from the shores of Lake Zeller and is surrounded by a shady garden.
For the first time, Prilau Castle was mentioned in documents from 1425. At that time, Christian Glaser from Prilau was its owner. Over the next four centuries, the magnificent palace passed from hand to hand. Some of its owners, representatives of well-known noble families, invested considerable funds in its improvement. Until 1722, the castle of Prilau was under the control of private individuals. After this date, the mansion became the property of the Chiemsee Diocese. In 1803, the diocese was dissolved, and Prilau Castle was put up for auction 8 years later. The last bishop to visit the Prilau Palace was Sigmund Christoph von Söll i Trauchburg. His coat of arms can still be seen above the entrance to the castle.
The palace on the shores of Lake Zeller was acquired by the sexton Anton Neumeier. The next owner of the castle was Gerti von Hoffmannstahl, the widow of the writer Hugo von Hoffmannsthal. She bought the mansion in 1932 and settled there with her son Raymond and his wife Elizabeth. During the Second World War, the Prilau castle was confiscated by the Nazis, and after 1945 the Hoffmannsthal family returned it for a very long time.
The transformation of a residential mansion into a hotel took place in 1987, when Messrs. Porsche began to operate here. On the territory of the fashionable castle hotel there is a private beach, a deer farm, a park, a golf course, a helicopter landing pad, and a spa center. A baroque chapel can be seen in the park.
