Description of the attraction
The Convent of St. Panteleimon, which is located just a kilometer from the village of Agrokipia in the Nicosia district, was established in its present form in the 18th century.
According to historical information, the monastery complex was originally built in the 15th century and then it was intended for men. As the inscription at the western entrance to the church says, the complex was reconstructed in 1770, as the old buildings were so dilapidated that they could collapse at any moment. Unfortunately, there are no documents left that could give an idea of what the monastery and the church looked like originally. Created in the 18th century. the complex consisted of a church and two buildings located on the north and east sides of this temple. At the same time, during perestroika, namely in 1774, the iconostasis and all the most valuable icons, including the icons of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary and St. Panteleimon, were covered with gilding. In addition, several more ancient icons were kept in the temple, which have survived to this day, which were painted in the 17th century - the oldest among them is the icon of St. George, dating back to 1684.
Later, in the 1970s, this monastery became a female monastery. And during the next restructuring, in the 1980s, additional premises were added: another wing appeared on the south side and a mezzanine was added. In addition, the northern part of the monastery was converted into a warehouse and a production workshop for making sweets. There was also once a room for the production of olive oil, but it was also converted into warehouses.
At the moment, only a few nuns live in the monastery of St. Panteleimon.
