Description of the attraction
The monastery of St. Nicholas (Agios Nikolaos) is located at a distance of about 4 kilometers from the town of Hydra and about 5, 2 kilometers from the nunnery of the Nativity of the Virgin of Zurva.
The date of foundation of the St. Nicholas Monastery has not been established. According to some sources, this is 1675, according to other sources - 1724. It is located on Mount Obori, one kilometer from the Holy Trinity Monastery. The road to the complex is rather difficult, rocky dirt road, often covered with mud.
The monastery church is a building in the Byzantine style with a traditional octahedral dome, inside it is decorated with a new wooden iconostasis, on which there are ancient icons painted according to the canons of Byzantine art of the 17th century.
The heyday of the monastery complex fell on the time after the revolution of 1821. The decline came at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1983, the monastery was restored, a major reconstruction of all structures and communications was carried out. One of the most dramatic changes in the monastery was its transformation into a nunnery.
