Description of the attraction
Brothers Schmidt in Saratov were rightfully called "flour kings". In the middle of the nineteenth century, starting with the windmills, the hardworking brothers already had an extensive clientele in the counties. Integrity, high-quality and timely execution of orders brought them good fame and profit, allowing them to expand and modernize production.
In the 1890s, when the Schmidt Brothers Trade and Industrial Partnership was formed, the fixed capital was estimated at three million rubles (at the end of the 90s it doubled). The partnership owned 4 steamers and 25 barges, including 40 non-steam vessels, as well as a trading house and 6 large mills. Being the owners of fashionable mansions (two of which decorate Saratov), country residences, trotters, yachts and cars, talented and hardworking entrepreneurs left in the history of Saratov a good memory and the first place in the production of flour in Russia at the end of the nineteenth century.
Two mills of the Schmidt brothers, which have survived to this day, amaze with their durability (one of them still houses a flour-grinding production). Small mill Schmidtov is located on the street. Astrakhanskaya (intersection with Shelkovichnaya), Big mill - on Chernyshevsky, 90. Both buildings are late nineteenth century, architect A. Salko.
The architecture is simple and austere at the same time: jagged parapets, pointed pediments, lanterns and weathercocks, spiers and trellises, all in a strictly sustained style. The functionality of the internal planning makes today's technologists ask themselves the question: how can you think over everything in such a way to the smallest detail?
Regardless of their functional affiliation, both mills are architectural monuments and landmarks of the city of Saratov.
