Description of the attraction
The city gates in Kamenets-Podolsk are located on the opposite side of the Zamkovy Bridge from the fortress. This is one of the most ancient defense and fortification structures of the city. They were part of the main defensive complex of the Old City and were a checkpoint through which one could get into the city from the side of the fortress.
The city gate was a complex of structures. On one side was the Gate Tower, in which the gate itself was located and through which the passage to the Old City was carried out. On the other side there was a casemate laboratory in which gunpowder was tested. And on the site of the current passage there used to be a defensive wall that connected these structures into a single complex. But relatively recently, this wall was dismantled to increase the traffic capacity of the Old Town.
The City Gate complex, as well as the rest of the defense system of the old Kamenets-Podolsky, has been repeatedly rebuilt and reconstructed. So, for example, in 1746 they were rebuilt under the leadership of the military engineer H. Dalke.
At the present time, the casemate laboratory has been completely rebuilt, and the Pod Bramoy cafe is located in it. The gate tower is used by this cafe as a seasonal site. And the rest of the defensive wall, above the laboratory, was rebuilt for an observation deck, from which a panorama of the Old Fortress, the Castle Bridge and part of the Smotrych River canyon opens.
An interesting fact, once again confirming the uniqueness of the structures of the Old City, is that standing on the Castle Bridge, a person is located among the two right banks of the same river. After all, the Castle Bridge stands not across the Smotrich River, but along it.
