Description of the attraction
The word "toran" in Croatian means a tower. Chorichev toran is the Chorichev tower located in the center of Vodice. She, like some other remains of fortresses in the region, was part of the fortification system of Vodice and served to protect the city from the Ottoman invasion.
Modern historians have only indirect information about the construction date of the Chorichev Tarani. In the documents of 1533, there is a mention of the stonecutter Ivan from Hvar, who undertook to build a stone house decorated with skillful carvings for the nobleman Jerome de Saracenis from Vodice. Perhaps this document refers to the Chorichev tower. Confirmation of this theory is considered to be the coat of arms, placed on the eastern side of the tower, where you can see the initials “H. S. (the first letters of the name and surname of Jerome de Saracenis). In the 17th century, the tower became the property of the Fondra noble family, who permanently resided in the city of Sibenik. Most likely, it was then that Chorichev toran was transformed into a residential building with a balcony on the ground floor, located on the eastern facade.
That's all we know about the history of the tower. The assumption of the presence in Vodice of the remains of other fortifications was never confirmed. Today Chorichev toran is located in a narrow alley in the very center of the historic city quarters. It seems that it has always been this way. However, according to some archival sources, in the past, the tower was completely or partially surrounded by the sea. Its owners at the beginning of the 18th century, when nothing reminded of the Ottoman threat, could enjoy the sea view right from their balcony.
Probably in the 18th or 19th centuries, a large enclosed courtyard was added to the Chorichev toran, designed on the principle of a covered atrium. In the future, they plan to open a museum in the tower.
