Description of the attraction

Aliki is a small resort village on the southeastern coast of the Greek island of Thassos, about 35 km from the administrative center of the island of the same name, which is also often called "Limenas", which means "port" in Greek.

The Aliki settlement is located on the shore of a small bay, divided into two picturesque bays by an incredibly beautiful cape overgrown with pine trees and century-old olive trees. This is one of the most beautiful and popular places on the island of Thassos with a fairly well-developed tourist infrastructure. Here you will find everything you need for a comfortable stay - comfortable beaches, cozy mini-hotels and apartments, taverns, bars and much more.

Almost the entire southeastern tip of the cape is an ancient marble quarry, which was developed from time immemorial until the 7th century AD. It was here that the famous Thassos marble, known far beyond the borders of modern Greece, was mined. Later, they were also engaged in the evaporation of sea salt, which is why, in fact, the settlement got its name, since "aliki" literally translates as "salt marsh".

Today, Cape Aliki, where, in addition to the remains of an old marble quarry, the ruins of an ancient settlement and ancient temples have survived to this day, is recognized as an important historical and archaeological monument. It is worth paying attention to the Christian chapel located in a small cave, to the entrance to which there is a small staircase.

Not far from Aliki, on the edge of a steep picturesque cliff, from the top of which breathtaking panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the Holy Mount Athos open, there is one of the main attractions of Thassos - the active nunnery of the Archangel Michael, where a relic is kept - a part of a nail from the Cross, on which Jesus Christ was crucified.
