Description of the attraction
Olympus of Montenegro is called Durmitor, Montenegrin National Park. UNESCO in 1980 declared it the pearl of the world wealth of the biosphere.
Scientists are still debating where the name of this magnificent mountain range came from. According to one version, the park got its name from the Latin "dormio" (to sleep). The legend that supports this version speaks of Roman legionnaires who once ended up in these parts and were very afraid of the local mountains. And so that the mountains slept peacefully, and the legionnaires themselves could pass them without hindrance, they offered prayers with requests to their gods. According to another version, the name came from the Celtic "dru-mi-tor" (translated as "water from the mountains").
When you admire the picturesque corners of Durmitor, both options come to mind: the sleeping peaks of the mountains hide among themselves eighteen glacial lakes, which are nicknamed "the eyes of the mountains" by the locals; there are also springs (there are 748 of them in total).
This park alone contains 7 ecosystems that are unique in their essence. These include the Black Lake, famous for its beauty and romance, unique black pines (a whole grove) and an ancient forest, which basically grows firs and spruces.
Another attraction of Durmitor is the glacial cave. It is located high above sea level (2040 km), and everyone who gets inside it is struck by the abundance of whole stalactite and stalagmite compositions. Peak Bobotov Kuk, 2523 m high, is considered the highest point in Montenegro. The entire massif surrounding it consists of 48 other peaks of various heights.
On the territory of the national park, you can find a considerable number of various monuments of cultural heritage, including even monasteries of the 15th century: one of them is dedicated to Dovol, the other to St. Archangel Michael.
Most of the locals and numerous guests of the country come to Durmitor Park not only for unity with nature, but also for a pleasant pastime. There are many opportunities for outdoor activities in this place: fishing in the Black Lake, boating, various types of trekking, lessons horse riding. Rafting on the Tara River and paragliding are extreme entertainment for connoisseurs of thrills. In winter, the park is overcrowded with fans of skiing and snowboarding. Thanks to the abundance of various descents from the mountains, everyone can choose a route to their liking.
