Description of the attraction

The church, named Vvedenskaya and located in Feodosia, is the oldest architectural monument of the city. It is very famous and popular among city visitors and local people. According to historical and archaeological materials, the Greek church was built from the seventh to the ninth century.

The temple consists of several structures that were built at different times. The oldest is its Byzantine part. It is a small hall-type church. The lower part of the bell tower itself consists of four pillars, which are covered by a very beautiful dome, which is on sails, and belongs to the buildings of a later period. This part of the building was the entrance portico. In 1829, a three-nave part of the building was erected, which connected the bell tower with the ancient part of the church. This building still exists today. In the same year, the gaps were laid between the pillars of the entrance portico. A tier was built above the portico to accommodate the bells. In the ancient part of the church, in a box vault, a light drum with tents was arranged. The interior of the church was decorated with frescoes and beautiful and exquisite stone carvings.

Previously, the Vvedenskaya Church was run by the Greek community of the city of Feodosia. According to the old-timers, the service in this church was conducted in two languages: Greek and Russian. In the courtyard of the temple there was a school, and housing for the priest was located.

The church stopped working in the 30s of the twentieth century. It was closed, like many other temples. The large dome together with the bell tower were demolished. In the past ten years, the church has been misused. The rich decoration of the temple was lost forever. A gym was set up in the building. In 1993, the dome was re-installed on the temple and restored. Currently, the Vvedenskaya Church is active.
