Description of the attraction

Despite the fact that officially Prevlaka is considered an island, in fact, it is a peninsula, because between it and the opposite shore there is only a small strip of land, which is covered with water only at high tide. It is called the Island of Flowers because numerous Black Sea vegetation blooms here in abundance. The island is also known for the fact that in the old days the monastery of St. Archangel Michael was located on its territory.

Prevlaka is located in the Tivat Bay. There is an airport nearby, to which a motorway leads through a specially built bridge. The island is small in size: 300x200 m.

Once it rightfully bore the name of the Island of Flowers - a large number of palms, plants and flowers, olive groves grew here, but everything changed when, during the time of socialist Yugoslavia, it was made a closed resort for the military, later they left quite a bit of their former bloom. During the period of wars and the collapse of the country, refugees from Bosnia flocked here, who destroyed most of the gardens. But the beautiful beach on the island has been preserved, and in the shade of numerous flowering plants you can hide from the blazing sun.

The second attraction of this place is the remains of an ancient monastery, which was once the residence of the metropolitan. The first monastery on the island, built in the 6th century, is Miholska Prevlaka, and since the 13th century, at a time when the state of Zeta was flourishing, here was the residence of an Orthodox metropolitan. The Zeta diocese was located in the monastery of St. Michael the Archangel until the middle of the 15th century, when tragedy occurred on the island.

The Venetians decided to destroy the Orthodox monastery. They had their own person who brought food to the monastery, as a result, during the feast day, all the inhabitants of the monastery were poisoned. And in order not to solve the crime, a plague epidemic was announced, and the old monastery was destroyed.

In the 19th century, Countess Ekaterina Vlastelinovich was engaged in the restoration of the monastery of Michael the Archangel, under her leadership the Trinity Church was built on the island, and today you can venerate the relics of 70 martyred monks from Prevlaka.

After the death of the countess, the restoration of the temple was suspended, and only recently were the premises with cells and a small church reconstructed. Today, three monks live in the monastery.
