Description of the attraction
South Bank Park, located on the site of the Brisbane Expo 88 international exhibition on the south bank of the Brisbane River, was opened in June 1992. The park is connected to the city center by the Victoria Bridge and to Gardens Point by the Goodwill Bridge.
The territory of the park consists of sections of rain forest and savannahs, ponds and beaches, a promenade and a variety of attractions - Bolshaya Arbor, Suncorp Square, Nepal Peace Pagoda, Ferris Wheel, as well as restaurants, shops and fountains. The Queensland Conservatory is also located here.
South Shore Park is one of the most important cultural sites in Brisbane, which regularly hosts festivals and events of various levels. About 11 million people visit the park every year!
Initially, the southern bank of the Brisbane River was a meeting place for the indigenous Turrbal and Yuggera tribes, and in the early 1840s it became the place of settlement of the first Europeans. In the 1850s, the business center of Brisbane was founded on this territory, but it was badly damaged during the floods of 1893, and it was decided to move it to the northern, higher, river bank. There he is now. With the relocation of the downtown area, the South Bank became home to a variety of variety theaters, homeless shelters and industrial enterprises.
It wasn't until the 1970s that new life off the Brisbane River's South Shore began with parks and the Queensland Cultural Center, which includes the Queensland Art Gallery, Museum of Queensland, Queensland Performing Arts Center, State Library and Gallery of Modern Art. In 1988, Brisbane hosted the international exhibition Expo 88, and the government intended to further develop this area for commercial purposes. However, a public campaign defended this site for the creation of the park, which was opened in 1992.
Visitors to the park will be interested in seeing its sights. For example, the Grand Arbor is 443 steel columns, entwined with bougainvillea, which bloom all year round. The gazebo stretches for 1 kilometer along the river bank and serves as a footpath. Suncorp Piazza is an open-air amphitheater with 2,158 seats. Various events are often held here. The 60-meter Ferris Wheel was installed in the park in August 2008 for the 20th anniversary of Expo 88 and the 150th anniversary of the founding of Queensland. From one of 42 booths, you can admire the panorama of the South Bank, the Brisbane River and the city center in 15 minutes. The Nepalese Peace Pagoda was originally installed at the site of Expo 88 and moved to the park after the exhibition ended. Traditional oriental architecture, art objects and a meditation area attract many visitors.
Another popular place is an artificial beach with an area of 2000 m2 filled with 4000 cubic meters of sand. The sand was brought from Moreton Bay, and every year 70 tons of sand are poured onto the beach. In 1999 and 2001, the beach received the award as the cleanest beach in Queensland.
