Description of the attraction

The Escher Museum is an art museum in The Hague that displays the work of the famous Dutch graphic artist Maurits Cornelis Escher.

Escher is probably the most famous graphic artist of the 20th century. He was born in the Netherlands in 1898, lived for a long time in Italy, then in Switzerland. He gave up painting and devoted himself to lithography. In his black and white works, color does not distract from playing with form and exploring "impossible figures". His paradoxical works are characterized by a peculiar sense of humor. Escher also has realistic landscapes, made mainly after his travels in Italy. Escher died in 1972.

In 2002 in The Hague, in a beautiful old mansion of the 18th century, his museum was opened. On the first and second floors, there is a permanent exhibition that acquaints visitors with the most famous works of Escher from different periods of his work. There are lithographs and etchings, as well as drawings and sketches. The gem of the collection is the seven-meter work "Metamorphoses III". The museum displays photographs of Escher and his family, as well as wooden "boards" and lithographic stones, from which prints of engravings and lithographs were later made. There are no paintings on the third floor, it is dedicated to various optical illusions that Escher so skillfully portrayed in his works and which inspired his work. Two halls of the museum are dedicated to the time when Queen Emma lived in this palace. In the halls of the museum there are lamps made specially for the museum by the famous artist Hans van Bentem, which in a certain way echo the motives of Escher's work and play an important role in creating a special atmosphere of this museum.
