Description of the attraction

Porvoo Cathedral was built in the middle of the 15th century. on the site of the old church and got its name in honor of the mother of Jesus Christ - Mary. Until the beginning of the XVIII century. the temple was repeatedly burned and plundered by the invaders of the city.

In 2008. the cathedral was last restored after the arson and re-lit, divine services were restored in it. The temple can accommodate up to 800 people. It hosts wedding ceremonies and christenings. The interior of the church is made in the form of a tall ship.

It received the status of a cathedral in 1723. after Vyborg became part of Russia after the Great Northern War.

For Finland, this temple is of particular importance, because here in March 1809, the Russian Emperor Alexander I announced the annexation of Finland to Russia in the status of an autonomous Grand Duchy. From that day on, Finnish statehood began.

The Porvoo Cathedral hosts summer music concerts on Thursdays at 8 pm, short stories about organ music at noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and a festival called “Music Night” on 25 August.
