Description of the attraction
The Monastery of Sotiros, which is about 7 km from the main town of the island, is located on a hill with a beautiful view. This is one of the most peaceful places on the whole island, the surrounding silence is disturbed only by the murmur of springs and the voices of birds.
This monastery, surrounded by pine trees, was built in the 16th century. It is a complex of buildings arranged in a semicircle, with a lovely little chapel standing in a flowering courtyard. All buildings are painted white and covered with terracotta tiled roofs. The sun-drenched courtyard heats up so much during the day that visitors are relieved when they enter the temple. In a thick-walled room with small windows, the iconostasis of the 16th century carved out of wood attracts attention.
There is only one monk living in the complex, keeping order. During the feast of the memory of the holy martyrs Boris and Gleb and the name day of Sotiros on August 6, the doors of the monastery are open to everyone, and the monastery participates in one of the largest festivals on the island.
