Description of the attraction

The monument to Yuri Dolgoruky is located in Kostroma. It was installed after the city's 850th anniversary celebrations in 2003.

In 1152 Yuri Dolgoruky founded Kostroma and it owes its existence, first of all, to the Grand Duke. The sculpture was installed on Voskresenskaya Square, which was recently called Sovetskaya. Quite a long period of time (more than 10 years) the townspeople have been waiting for this solemn moment. Thanks to the help of many sponsors, this project was implemented.

The monument is huge. Its height is 4.5 meters, weight is 4 tons. Cast from the highest quality bronze. The project of the monument was created by the famous Moscow sculptor Vadim Mikhailovich Tserkovnikov. He became famous for the creation of the monument to Chaliapin, the reconstruction of the monument "Worker and Collective Farm Woman" at VDNKh. The architect of the monument was G. L. Morozov, artist - S. I. Kadyberdeev.

A massive bronze statue of Prince Dolgoruky was cast in Kazan by the craftsmen of VKNIIVOLT - the production and experimental association of the Volga-Kama Research and Design and Technological Institute of Waterborne Timber Transport. Work on the sculpture took over 2 months. The composition is represented by 15 parts cast in bronze, connected by welding seams.

The event that preceded the erection of the monument speaks of the godliness of this wonderful deed. Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II was in Kostroma before the festive event and presented the city with a capsule with earth from the burial place of the prince - from the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. A solemn ceremony of laying the stone was held at the site of the future monument. Archbishop of Kostroma and Galich Alexander, who consecrated the stone, took part in this action. Soon the townspeople watched that he was pacifying.

The monument represents the figure of the Grand Duke sitting on the throne. He stretches out his right hand in front of him, indicating that a new city will soon appear here. In his left hand, the prince, like a cross, holds a sword, showing that he came here not as a warrior, but as a conqueror. The head is adorned with the cap of Monomakh. The sculpture glitters in the sun like gold. This effect was achieved thanks to the use of the sandblasting method, which consists in cleaning the monument with special sand.

The monument to Grand Duke Yuri Dolgoruky, the man who revived Pereslavl, who founded Kostroma and Moscow, was opened on August 29, on the feast of the Icon of Our Lady of Fyodorov, the patroness of the city.

Today, Voskresenskaya Square is one of the favorite places of Kostroma residents. You should definitely come here and pay tribute to the Grand Duke - Yuri Dolgoruky.
