Description of the attraction
Schmittenhehe is an alpine peak 1965 meters above sea level, located in the Kitzbühel Alps, in the central part of Austria, in the federal state of Salzburg, 290 km from Vienna. Mount Schmittenhehe rises above the village of Zell am See, a famous winter sports resort. The slopes of this peak have long been crossed out by well-equipped ski slopes of various levels of difficulty. Vacationers are brought to the top of the mountain by 6 funiculars, 9 chairlifts and 7 drag lifts.
Mount Schmittenhehe is surrounded by the same mountain peaks, often without names, heaps of rocks and glaciers. 15, 2 km south of it is the highest peak of the region - Hoher Tenn with a height of 3368 meters above sea level.
The slopes of the Schmittenhehe are overgrown with mixed forest. The region of the mountain is rather sparsely populated. According to experts, 34 people live here per 1 square kilometer. The average annual temperature in the vicinity of the mountain is 2 degrees Celsius. The warmest month is July, when the air warms up to 14 degrees. In winter, temperatures drop to -10 degrees Celsius. It mostly rains in August. The driest month is March.
Of the architectural landmarks that can be found on the mountain, the Chapel of Elizabeth, which was built in 1904 in memory of Empress Elizabeth, better known as Sisi, should be noted. Its consecration took place only in September 1908 and was timed to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the death of the ruler.
