Description of the attraction

The Serbian War Museum (Serbian Memorial House) is located near Esplanade Square (Spianada) in Corfu Town. The exposition of the museum is dedicated to the tragic fate of the Serbian soldiers during the First World War and their subsequent stay on the island of Corfu in 1916-1918. The building that houses the museum was donated to Serbia by the Municipality of Corfu in 1993. The consulate of Serbia is also located in the same building.

In October 1915, under the onslaught of the Austro-Hungarian, German and Bulgarian troops, the Serbian army and civilians were forced to leave their territory. With huge losses, they retreated to the shores of the Adriatic through Albania and Montenegro. This transition went down in history under the name "Albanian Golgotha". With the help of the allies, about 150 thousand survivors were able to cross to the island of Corfu. Russian Emperor Nicholas II insisted on helping Serbian refugees. He also took on the costs, and the French transported the Serbs on their ships to Corfu. Here they found refuge. Grateful Serbs called Corfu "the island of salvation." The stay of Serbian citizens on the island lasted for three years. During this time, Serbian shops, schools, sports associations were established here. And a Serbian newspaper was published in the local printing house.

The exposition of the museum is very extensive and varied. The collection of the museum contains photographs, various archival documents, weapons and ammunition, regimental flags, Serbian uniforms, surgical instruments, military equipment, sacred objects and many others. The Serbian War Museum is of great importance to Serbian history. Every year the museum is visited by a huge number of tourists and guests of Corfu.
