Description of the attraction
Tumski Bridge is a steel bridge over the Oder River in Wroclaw. The bridge was built in 1889 and replaced the old wooden bridge. In the past, the bridge was open to car traffic, but now it is a pedestrian bridge. Tumsky Bridge is also called the Bridge of Lovers, as newlyweds often hang locks here, symbolizing their strong feelings, and the keys are thrown from the bridge into the river.
The first wooden bridge was built on this site in the 12th century and functioned until the mid-19th century, after which it was replaced by a modern steel bridge by the architect Alfred von Scholz. The two-span bridge is almost 53 meters long and 6.8 meters wide. The grand opening of the Tumski Bridge took place in the presence of the city authorities and Mayor Ferdinand Friedensburg.
In 1893, sculptures by Gustav Grunenberg appeared on the bridge: St. John the Baptist and St. Jadwiga. The bridge was lit by gas lanterns, which can be seen today. In 1945, the first major overhaul of the bridge was carried out, which was necessary after the siege of the Breslau fortress.
In October 1976, the Tumskiy Bridge was included in the Register of Historical Monuments. Currently, the Tumskiy Bridge is not only a tourist attraction, but also a favorite place for urban youth.
