Description of the attraction
Iron Mountain is one of the most picturesque mountains in the North Caucasus, located north of Mount Beshtau, on the northeastern outskirts of the resort town of Zheleznovodsk. The height of the mountain is more than 850 m above sea level, the area is about 190 hectares. The Iron Mountain has a conical shape with a diameter of 1.8 km with a platform at the top - 200 sq. M. The base of the Zheleznaya Mountain is ringed with an asphalt horizontal road, the length of which is 3.5 km. From the top, a beautiful panorama of the resort and the surrounding mountains opens up.
The very name "Iron" mountain received due to sulphate-sodium deposits of mineral waters, which have the color of rusty iron. On the territory of the mountain, on the eastern slope, there is the Zheleznovodsk resort park, founded in 1825.
The main treasure of the mountain is twenty-three sources of mineral waters. The base of the mountain abounds in outlets of cold, warm and hot calcium water, which is widely used to treat various diseases. The mountain slopes are covered with dense deciduous forests. Hornbeam, linden, ash, oak, maple, beech prevail among the trees. In the underbrush grows hawthorn, elderberry, privet, hazel. The herbaceous cover is also rich, there are many medicinal plants, among them - Caucasian belladonna, celandine large, large-cup primrose, fragrant violet, Valerian officinalis, male fern.
At one time, A. S. Pushkin, L. N. Tolstoy, M. Yu. Lermontov, M. I. Glinka and other famous personalities who visited the Caucasian Mineral Waters.
Since 1961, Mount Zheleznaya has been officially recognized as a regional geological natural monument.
