Description of the attraction
The Museum of Contemporary Art is housed in an unusual 20th century building and houses a very valuable international collection of contemporary art, including the famous Berardo collection. Therefore, the Museum of Modern Art is also called the Museum of the Berardo Collection. The museum exhibits works of art by European and American masters from 1920 to the present day. The museum houses only a small part of Berardo's collection, most of which are kept in the Museum of Modern Art in Belem.
Jose Berardo is a famous Portuguese figure, billionaire and renowned collector of extremely rare art objects. From his collection, the museum presents the following works: sculptures by one of the best artists and sculptors of Barcelona, Susan Solano, works by the sculptor Carlos Nogueira, as well as an exposition of the conceptual artist Michael Craig-Martin.
The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions representing different trends in art, for example: surrealism, abstract expressionism in the works of American artists, pop art, abstractionism. Among these temporary exhibitions was an exhibition of works by the sculptor Ruy Chafes, whose work has also been exhibited at the Pena National Palace and Pena Park. The museum also hosted a huge exhibition of works by the renowned artist and sculptor Giulio Pomar entitled Autobiography. The museum has repeatedly exhibited works from the collection of the German expressionist artist Eric Kann.
