The opening of the theater took place in March 1989 with the play "A man came to a woman." The production was directed by Iosif Raikhelgauz. The performance was highly appreciated. He received the award for Best Director. Lyubov Polishchuk received the award for the best female role, and Albert Filozov - for the best male.

In the same year, the theater got its own permanent building with an auditorium for 380 spectators. The theater was given the building on Trubnaya Square, which in the past housed the Hermitage restaurant. In 1998, the theater opened a "Small Stage" - "Winter Garden" with an auditorium for 200 spectators. It was opened with the play "Karlovna's Love" by Joseph Reichelgauz.

At different times such famous artists as Alexey Petrenko, Lyubov Polishchuk, Olga Yakovleva, Armen Dzhigarkhanyan, Lev Durov, Mikhail Gluzsky worked in the theater. Sergei Yursky, Stanislav Govorukhin, Mikhail Kozakov and other directors were involved in the theater as directors. Nowadays, the theater continues to be directed by Joseph Reichelgauz. The theater staged plays by young Russian playwrights. The theater provides an opportunity to stage performances for experienced directors and young talented Russian and foreign directors.

The troupe of the theater tours a lot in foreign countries and cities of Russia. The theater takes part in theater festivals. Since 1994 the theater has been holding an annual festival “I will call my friends….”. It is timed to coincide with Bulat Okudzhava's birthday and opens on May 9. The two-week festival opens ceremoniously on Trubnaya Square. Songs of Bulat Okudzhava sound. Performances are bards, famous and young singers of the author's song, poets. On the evening of May 9, a Gala concert takes place in the theater. Every year, new performers take part in the festival, who strive to honor the memory of Bulat Okudzhava. The popular festival is supported by the Moscow Department of Culture.
