Description of the attraction

The Golden Mile is a popular stretch of beach and promenade in Durban. It starts from the Ushaka Sea World theme park and runs to the Suncoast Casino next to the Entertainment World in northern Durban.

This part of Durban is one of the city's top tourist attractions. The wide stretch of golden sand, artificially divided by numerous piers, is a great place for lovers of the subtropical sun and warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Most of the beaches on the Golden Mile are protected all year round by special nets from possible shark attacks. The beach is also known as a surfer's paradise, particularly the South Beach section.

A feature of this coastline is the combination of residential apartments and tourist hotels, which began to develop in the 1970s, interspersed with popular restaurants and nightclubs.

The Golden Mile has long been popular with South Africans during the holiday season: June-July and December-January. In particular, locals and visitors to the city come here to enjoy its many attractions, which include:

casinos, restaurants, shops, Sea World Aquarium, water park, dolphinarium, Blue Lagoon, a popular picnic and fishing spot, Mini-city with a miniature copy of Durban complete with a working miniature railway and airport. The Oceanway Walking Trail runs along the beaches to attract the majority of holidaymakers and locals alike to walking and cycling.

North Beach, Dairy Beach and Country Club are the most popular surfing spots. There is also a Skate Park and a Surfing Museum.
