Description of the attraction
On August 18, 2003, a new museum was opened in St. Petersburg, one of the most modern museums in the city - the Museum of the History of Photography (MIF). This happened at the initiative of a number of public organizations and individuals. The museum has united in itself several private collections of different interests. The basis of the museum was the collection of V. V. Platonov, which was exhibited earlier at the Art School named after V. V. N. Roerich. The museum premises currently consist of two halls with a permanent exhibition and four more halls, which house temporary exhibitions, a library and a depository.
Man has always tried to stop the "beautiful moment" or at least capture it. But only with the invention of photography it became easier and more accessible. Photography technology is developing rapidly. In the permanent exhibition of the museum, you can see the attributes of a photographer of the last century. Here you can understand how the technology of photography was developing: from the old camera obscura, which can be viewed in the center of the second hall, to the corner of the “Soviet amateur photographer” - the bathroom of a standard apartment turned into a photo laboratory. Various vintages, originals of old photographs, negatives on glass, paper and film are displayed here. The museum has over 5,000 exhibits.
The main distinguishing feature of the Museum of the History of Photography in St. Petersburg is the versatility of the collected and displayed collection. As the ultimate goal, the museum plans to create a collection that includes all aspects of the development of the entire period of the existence of world photography.
Today, when the process of updating techniques and technologies in photography is happening at a tremendous speed, interest in photography is growing more and more. The museum tries to show the continuity of the development of photography, in which the photograph has become an object of real life. The four exhibition halls are constantly changing expositions of works by contemporary photographers. Thus, the museum also serves as a functioning gallery and meeting place for young people with cameras.
