Description of the attraction
Children's railway of Dnepropetrovsk is located in a cozy city park named after Lazar Globa. This miniature railway is the first in Ukraine, and the second in the USSR and in the world. Such an out-of-school institution acquaints children with railway specialties.
The children's railway was opened in 1936 thanks to the Dnepropetrovsk steam locomotive repair plant. Dnepropetrovsk schoolchildren were engaged in the design of such a road, and the project documentation was prepared by students of the Dnepropetrovsk Institute of Transport Engineers. The railway was built, like all the ChRWs of that time, by the method of Komsomol subbotniks.
To pass the railway line, two tunnels were built, the length of which is 10 and 30 meters, they were named after Pushkin and Mayakovsky. Two stations were also built: the main station Zhovten (now Pionerskaya), Komsomolsk (now Komsomolskaya) and the Depo platform named after Chapaev. But with the beginning of the war, in 1941, the road was closed and almost completely destroyed. The road was restored already in 1944.
Today the Children's Railway has one station - Pionerskaya. At the station there are classrooms, a station attendant, a waiting room and a ticket office. The ChRW operates diesel locomotives TU2-134 and TU2-172, as well as three PAFAWAG passenger cars. The length of the road is 2 km.
Every year, young railway workers and pupils of Dnepropetrovsk schools have the opportunity to gain useful knowledge and practical skills here. The Children's Railway runs from May to October every weekend, and in winter during the winter break.
