Description of the attraction
Lying in the northern part of the Aegean Sea, the Greek island of Thassos is famous not only for its magnificent beaches, stunning natural landscapes and incredible beauty of landscapes, but also for a host of interesting sights, among which Antique Thassos undoubtedly deserves special attention.
The ruins of the ancient city lie in the vicinity of the modern administrative center of the island of Thassos (also known as Limenos) in the area of the so-called "old port", and are an important historical and archaeological site.
Founded back in the early 7th century BC in ancient times, the city, largely due to the rich natural resources of the island and its location, flourished and was an important political, religious and commercial center with its own coinage. It had a city and an impressive naval flotilla, which in its help was practically not inferior to the Athenian. Throughout its history, Ancient Thassos has been repeatedly attacked, destroyed and rebuilt, but when exactly it was finally abandoned is not known for certain. Excavations of the ancient city began only at the beginning of the 20th century by the French Archaeological School.
Unfortunately, not so much has survived from Ancient Thassos to this day, and, nevertheless, its ruins still make it possible to appreciate the former greatness of the ancient city. Even today you can see the remains of massive fortress walls made of the famous Thassos marble, the ruins of the agora with the remains of the colonnade and ancient sanctuaries, the ancient theater, the foundations of the Temple of Athena at the top of the Acropolis, the Sanctuary of Pan and much more. A significant part of the artifacts found during archaeological excavations are today presented in the Archaeological Museum of Thassos.
