Description of the attraction

In the village of Yurino (formerly Arkhangelskoe), on the picturesque bank of the Volga, a medieval castle with fabulous crenellated towers, colored stained-glass windows and a glass dome of a winter garden rises. The estate in this style with a complex of magnificent buildings (built in the 18-19th century) and adjacent lands belonged to the grand-nephew of Field Marshal Sheremetyev - Major General Vasily Sergeevich Sheremetyev. Several craftsmen were involved in the construction of the castle of extraordinary beauty, combining elements of various styles in the architecture of the building based on facade red and black bricks with white-stone cornices, balcony balusters and window frames.

Surrounded by evergreen pines and Russian birches, the estate with a total area of more than 60 hectares, in addition to the castle, had outbuildings, a park, a vegetable garden, an orchard, a greenhouse, an enclosure for wild animals, artificial ponds with poured islets, etc., made in the landscape style of a Russian estate.

In our time, the interiors of the castle have preserved marble columns, lattices on the windows made of ceramics, mosaic stained glass windows and many other unique design elements. The architectural pride of that time was the glass dome of the winter garden, under which a royal palm tree and a variety of outlandish flowers, brought from different parts of the world, grew. The luxury of the interior of the castle and the scope of the landscape design of the Sheremetyevs' estate are still impressive. Guests can stay year-round at the hotel, located inside the building, feeling the spirit of the nineteenth century in the palace rooms with historic interiors.

The Yurinsky castle of the Sheremetyevs is a historical and architectural monument and a tourist attraction of the Republic of Mari-El.
