Description of the attraction

The fair town of Gaming is part of the Lackenhof ski resort, which is located at the western foothills of the Otcher Mountains. In the past, the city of Gaming gained fame thanks to the monastery of the same name, which was founded in 1330 by the Austrian Duke Albrecht II of Habsburg. This large monastery was supposed to become a family tomb. Here not only the founder of the monastery found their last refuge, but also his wife Joanna and his daughter-in-law Elizabeth of Luxembourg, daughter of Charles IV. In 1782, during the reign of Emperor Joseph II, the monastery was abolished. Today, part of the premises of the former Gaming monastery is occupied by a hotel, while other rooms have been turned into classrooms.

There are two churches in Gaming, which you can see while walking around the city. One of them is located in the northwestern part of the village and is consecrated in honor of Saints Philip and Jacob. She was first mentioned in a 1274 document. At the beginning of the 16th century, a new one was built on the site of the old building of the temple, which in 1712 was decorated in a Baroque manner. The church houses an altar from the first half of the 18th century, which was brought here in 1797 from the local cemetery chapel.

The second church is located in the Lackenhof area. The church of St. Leonard was erected when the parish of Lackenhof was founded in 1785. In the period from 1821 to 1837, the temple was expanded. The main altar with altarpieces of the Holy Trinity and Saints Augustine, Ambrose and Nicholas was brought here from the Gaming Monastery. The pulpit was made in the style of Louis XVI in 1786. The organ by Max Jakob is dated 1890.

In the vicinity of Gaming is the largest nature park in Lower Austria, Otcher-Thormeyer. Its area is 170 square kilometers.
