State Memorial House-Museum of N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov is located in the city of Tikhvin, on Rimsky-Korsakov Street, 12.

The family of the future outstanding composer settled in Tikhvin in 1836. The composer's father, Andrei Petrovich Rimsky-Korsakov, was an unusually honest, kind and progressive man. Arriving in Tikhvin, he gave freedom to all his servants. Nikolai was born on March 6, 1844 in Tikhvin and lived here until he was 12 years old. The boy showed musical talent from the age of two. At the age of 6, an old neighbor E. A. Unkovskaya taught him music. About two years later, O. F. Feil, who noticed remarkable musical abilities in Nikolay. Then he entered the St. Petersburg Naval Corps and until the age of 18 came to his home on vacation.

The Tikhvin period of Rimsky-Korsakov's life was short-lived, but his influence was great. Tikhvin motives are reflected in his work. These are Russian folk songs, which are part of the collection of Russian folk songs; Overture “Bright Holiday” with chimes of local bells; fragments of the operas "The Tsar's Bride", "The Snow Maiden", "The Pskovite Woman", "The Tale of Tsar Saltan" and others.

After the death of his father, the building stood boarded up until 1872, and then for some time it belonged to private individuals. In 1914, local residents expressed a desire to install a memorial plaque on the house in honor of the 70th anniversary of the composer's birth. But she appeared here only in 1923. During the Great Patriotic War, the house was seriously damaged and required restoration.

House-Museum of N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov was opened on July 23, 1944 by a government decision to mark the 100th anniversary of the composer's birth. The museum is a historical and cultural monument of federal significance. The main fund of the museum has more than 10,000 items.

The Rimsky-Korsakov House was built at the beginning of the 19th century by the composer's grandfather. The building is a wooden one-storey building with a mezzanine; a suite of rooms runs along the main facade. The main doors, stucco cornices, floors, stoves have been preserved in the house. The children and grandchildren of Nikolai Andreevich took a great part in organizing and decorating the museum, donating more than 200 memorial items to the museum's collection. The museum is adjoined by a manor park with an area of 1 hectare

In 1980-1984, restoration was carried out, the result of which was the restoration of the interiors of six memorial rooms: the front, the father's study, the dining room, two living rooms, the mother's room. In addition, an additional exposition was created, which was dedicated to the history of the Rimsky-Korsakov family and to the elder brother of Nikolai Andreyevich Rear Admiral Voin Andreyevich.

The house contains family heirlooms: a woolen undershirt, a baptismal shirt, a ribbon with growth marks, and children's kid gloves. The second living room contains an authentic N. A. grand piano. Rimsky-Korsakov (Becker firm), which served him for more than three decades. This piano was played by Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, Borodin, Lyadov, Glazunov, Stravinsky, Scriabin, Taneev. This piano was performed by Fyodor Ivanovich Chaliapin.

Every year in Tikhvin, on the native land of the composer, music competitions named after N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov, festivals of children's creativity "Golden Cockerel" and "Tikhvin Lel", Orthodox culture "Festive bells", musical meetings and subscriptions, events of the city philharmonic society.
