Description of the attraction
The city of Viseu, located on a hill, is famous not only for being one of the largest cities in Europe without railway stations, but also for the fact that in the 16th century it was home to one of the most important schools of painting in Portugal, famous for such outstanding artists as the landscape painter Gaspar Vaz and Vasco Fernandez, also known as Granu Vasco.
Next to the Viseu Cathedral is the Granu Vascu Museum. Its first director, Francisco de Almeida Moreira, was an avid art collector of various styles and devoted most of his life to collecting works by Portuguese artists.
The Almeida Moreira Museum is located in the home of Francisco de Almeida Moreira, where he lived all his life. According to his will, after his death, the house passed to the city. The house and its complete collection were inherited by the city of Viseu in 1939.
The building of the museum was built in the Moorish style. Inside the museum, we can enjoy modern art and a library that contains classical literature and manuscripts by Almeida Moreira. Among the museum's collection are items made of classic porcelain and faience of the 17th-18th centuries, sculptures and national furniture of the 20th century, paintings, and ceramics. There is a garden next to the museum, where you can see a beautiful sculptural image of a woman and a child.
