Description of the attraction

The Donetsk Regional Russian Drama Theater is located on the Teatralnaya Square of the city of Mariupol, which is located next to the City Square at the intersection of Artyom Street and Lenin Avenue.

The Mariupol theater began its history in 1878, when the first professional theater troupe in the city was created. The son of the merchant V. Shapovalov rented a room for the theater, in which artists L. Linitskaya, I. and L. Zagorskiy, and others began their career. amateur performances and contributed to the aesthetic education of Mariupol residents.

In November 1887, the grand opening of a new theater building, built at the expense of V. Shapovalov, took place, which was named the Concert Hall (later the Winter Theater). The theater building had a huge stage, a special place for the orchestra, comfortable chairs and a hall for 800 spectators. The theater season began with the performance of the play "The Inspector General" by N. Gogol.

In the 1880-1890s. the great masters of the Ukrainian stage on tour took place: I. Karpenko-Kary, M. Kropyvnytsky, M. Staritsky, P. Saksagansky and others. In 1934, on the basis of the city drama theater, the Donetsk Music and Drama Theater was created with a permanent stay in the city of Mariupol.

For the first time, the Russian Music and Drama Theater of the city of Mariupol went on tour to Poltava, Stalino, Kremenchug, Makeevka, Kharkov and Sumy in 1937. In 1947 the theater was closed. It restored its activity only in 1959. At that time the construction of a new building began. In the same year, the Mariupol Theater received the status of the Donetsk State Theater. The grand opening of the newly erected building took place in November 1960. In 1985, the small stage of the drama theater was opened.

On November 12, 2007, by order of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the theater was given an academic status.
