Description of the attraction

The Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul is a Catholic church located in the Polish city of Katowice.

In the second half of the 19th century, Katowice was one of the fastest growing cities in Upper Silesia. Twenty years after the creation of the Church of the Immaculate Conception (in 1870), it became clear that the number of parishioners had increased, and it became necessary to divide the parish. It was decided to build a new church in the southern region of Katowice. In 1892, the council of St. Mary's Church decided to purchase land from the farmer Adamek. Particularly interested in the construction of the new church was the priest of the parish of St. Mary - Victor Schmidt.

When choosing the architectural concept of the church, Romanesque and Neo-Gothic styles were considered. Georg Kopp from the diocese announced an architectural competition for the best church design. The winner was a German architect from Hanover, Joseph Ebers. The construction of the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul began on May 1, 1898, and was completed in 1902. The solemn consecration of the church took place on March 28, 1902.

The altar and nave of the church are decorated with stained-glass windows depicting the figures of Saints Peter and Paul, the Holy Family, Jesus. In addition to stained glass windows, the interior is decorated with statues of saints.

In November 1925, the Church of Peter and Paul became a cathedral.
