Description of the attraction
The Grand Royal Palace is located in the extraordinarily beautiful square of Barcelona - the King's Square and is a complex of several buildings. The palace was built in the 11th century and existed for a long time as the residence of the counts of Barcelona, and later the kings of Aragon.
The architectural complex of the Great Royal Palace includes the Chapel of Saint Agatha, which houses the wooden altar of the three kings, created in 1465 by the artist Jaime Huge and recognized as a true masterpiece of Catalan Gothic, the King Martin Tower, which is part of the Steward's Palace, annexed to the Great Royal Palace, and the Palace itself was built in the 11th century.
To the building of the Palace in 1359-1362. the Throne Room (Salo de Tinell), designed by Guillermo Carbonelli, was added. In this room, the meetings of the Holy Inquisition were held, and it was in this room that King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile greeted Christopher Columbus, who had returned from America. The building of the Throne Hall (34 meters long, 17 - wide and 12 meters high) is the embodiment of the Catalan Gothic of the time, and one of the most striking examples of the Gothic style in architecture in Europe.
Today, the premises of the Grand Royal Palace house the Frederic Mares Museum and the Historical Museum of the city.
The doors of the Royal Palace are open to visitors all year round, so everyone can touch the history and admire the beauty and grandeur of the decoration of the former royal residence.
