Description of the attraction

Right in the heart of New Delhi, the capital of India, is a national architectural monument called the Gateway of India. At one glance, the Parisian Arc de Triomphe comes to mind, and this is not surprising, since it was she who was taken as a model for the construction of the Gateway of India. They were designed by the architect Edvino Lachens, and built in 1931 to commemorate the 90,000 soldiers who died in the First World War. And they were originally called the All India War Memorial.

The gate of India is built of red and yellow sandstone and granite, it is an arch 42 meters high, on the walls of which you can see the names of the dead soldiers engraved. Unlike the Parisian Arch, the Indian Arch is not so pretentious, it does not have so many small details, so it looks rather restrained and strict.

In 1971, after the end of the third Anglo-Afghan war, at the initiative of Indira Gandhi, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was built at the foot of the arch, where an eternal flame burns.

Not far from the monument is a dome, supported by four columns, also designed by Lachens. Initially, under the dome was a statue of British King George V, but after India gained independence, the statue was moved to Coronation Park. At the moment, the question of installing a monument to Gandhi at this place is being discussed.

Around the Gate and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a large park is laid out, which has become a very popular place for all kinds of picnics. It is also not empty in the evening and at night - at this time the memorial is illuminated and looks just magical.

Various festivals and holidays are often held on this territory. And in 2011, the first Kite Festival took place in the park near the arch, which attracted a huge number of tourists from all over the world.
