Description of the attraction
The Zhytomyr Museum of Nature in the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross is one of the departments of the Zhytomyr Museum of Local Lore. The exposition of the museum is located in the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross, which is located in the most ancient place of the city - on the Castle Hill, along the Cathedral street, 14.
The Church of the Exaltation of the Cross in the Byzantine style was built in the 19th century. In the 1930s, it was closed by the Soviet authorities, and in 1987 its premises were given to the Museum of Nature.
The Zhytomyr Museum is special. In addition to local natural material, it contains an excellent geological collection, which was created in the 19th century by the Volyn governor M. Chertkov. More than 12 thousand exhibits are presented in the museum funds, most of which are ready to tell a story about the flora and fauna of Polesye, its climate, as well as about the local rivers and bowels.
The Museum of Nature is famous for its huge collection of stuffed animals and birds, which is the largest in Ukraine. In addition, the Zhytomyr Museum houses a collection of minerals, as well as precious and semi-precious stones. The six large halls of the museum house over one and a half thousand exhibits that convey all the picturesqueness and beauty of the Zhytomyr region. Here you can get acquainted with the flora and fauna of this region, its nature and water resources. The museum also exhibits exhibitions from other museums and private collections. The most popular among them are the expositions "Anomalies of the Human Body" and "Butterflies of the World".
At the moment, there are disputes about the return of the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross to the Orthodox believers.
