Description of the attraction
Here is the sanctuary of Artemis, founded, according to legend, by Orestes and Iphigenia, the children of Agamemnon. Bravrona reached its heyday in the 6th century BC, when the worship of the goddess Artemis was elevated to the rank of state religion.
The main place in the sanctuary was occupied by the temple of Artemis of the 5th century BC, of which only the foundation has survived. Next to the temple is the Byzantine chapel of St. George of the 13th century. On the stone terrace there is a shallow grotto where Iphigenia's grave was. At the base of the terrace is a courtyard surrounded on three sides by Doric columns. A stone bridge from the 5th century BC has also survived.
The museum exhibits items found during the excavations of Bravrona: miniature vases, jewelry, figurines of girls performing a ritual dance, bas-reliefs with images of the gods.
